How to Lose Weight After 40

You’re showing up. You’re putting in the work. You’re sore on Wednesdays. But the scale isn’t moving or it’s moving painfully slowly and you’re starting to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.

Here’s the truth: the gym is only half the equation. What happens in the kitchen and outside of it is the other half. Let’s talk about the most common reasons training stops translating into weight loss, and what our coaches have found actually works.

The Most Common Culprits

1. You’re Not Eating Enough Protein

Protein is the most important macronutrient for body composition but most adults over 40 are significantly under-eating it. Protein preserves muscle mass during a caloric deficit, promotes satiety, and has a higher thermic effect (meaning your body burns more calories digesting it). A general target for adults doing regular resistance training is 0.7–1 gram per pound of bodyweight.

2. You’re Inconsistently in a Deficit

A lot of our members are doing very well Monday through Friday and then bouncing out of their deficit over the weekend. Not dramatically, just enough that the cumulative effect over weeks and months essentially neutralizes the progress from the weekdays. This isn’t a moral failing. It’s math.

“Susie is only slightly losing weight because she’s in a deficit, but she’s probably bouncing out of it more often than not. We talked about being a little more consistent with tracking, knowing this is a season of life that should only last 6–12 weeks.”— Theresa, Coach at Iron Family Fitness

3. You’re Skipping Meals Early in the Day

Not eating until 11am or noon, especially before morning workouts tells your body it’s in scarcity mode. Cortisol stays elevated, muscle breakdown increases, and you tend to overconsume in the afternoon and evening. Bringing a protein shake and a snack to the gym, or having even a small breakfast before your early morning session, can change the metabolic picture significantly.

4. There May Be Something Else Going On

Some of our members are doing everything right and still struggling to lose weight. In those cases, we refer them to functional medicine partners who can assess hormones, thyroid function, and metabolic markers. Sonia is working with a functional medicine doctor to assess her bloodwork. Julia V is navigating the specific challenges of menopause and learning how to balance training and nutrition for her changing body.

“Julia is learning how to balance working out and eating while in menopause to feel better and to lose weight. She realizes it is a lifestyle change and feels pretty confident about losing 5–6lbs over the next 90 days with the program she’s doing.”— Niccie, Iron Family Fitness Coach

What Our Coaches Recommend

  • Track your food, even loosely, for 2 weeks. Not to be perfect, but to get honest about what’s actually going in.
  • Prioritize protein at every meal. If you’re making one change, make this one.
  • Eat something in the morning, especially on training days. Even something small.
  • Look at your weekend. Is that where the deficit disappears?
  • Consider working with a functional medicine provider if you’ve been consistent and still aren’t moving. There may be something hormonal or metabolic at play.

It’s a Season, Not a Sentence

Losing weight after 40 is slower than it was at 25. That’s real. But it’s absolutely doable with the right approach, the right support, and a timeline that isn’t based on panic but on sustainable, compounding progress.

Kimberly Kauffman lost 20 pounds. Sandy Ellis lost 10 while working night shifts and acknowledging her nutrition wasn’t perfect. These results happen at Iron Family Fitness because we meet our members where they are and build a plan that actually fits their lives.

Your nutrition doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be consistent. Let us help you find what that looks like for you.
