Why I Joined Planet Fitness (Even Though I Own a Gym)

I think the thing that was preventing me from joining another gym was the feelings of judgement that I didnt want to have to deal with from other people.

I have everything at our gym, great equipment, structured classes, accountability from coaches, an incredible community, and programming designed to help people move better, feel better, and live stronger lives.

And yet… I still for the life of me cant seem to get in a good workout.

Not because I don’t love Iron Family Fitness.
Not because our system doesn’t work.
But because sometimes the environment you’re in becomes the very thing that makes it hard to focus on yourself.

The Work-From-Home Effect (But Applied to Fitness)

If you’ve ever worked from home, you know exactly how this goes.

You sit down ready to work but then you realize that:

  • The laundry needs switched
  • The dishes catch your eye
  • A delivery shows up
  • Your phone buzzes
  • You remember five other things you “should probably do”

Before you know it, an hour disappears and nothing meaningful gets accomplished. You even realize that you “should” get your work done, but the other 5 things on your list become a big enough priority to distract your attention.

Ironically… that’s what started happening to me inside my own gym. I would schedule my workout in, leave myself plenty of time, put my phone on focus mode so that I didn’t have any digital distractions……and I would maybe get 2-3 movements done in an hour.

My brain would not let me take “me” time without feeling guilty that I wasn’t working.

When I’m at Iron Family Fitness, my brain is always on.

Members need support.
Coaches have questions.
Programs need adjustments.
Something needs cleaned or tidied.
I look around and think “how can I fix that”
Someone walks in.
Something needs handled.

Even when I plan to work out, it turns into:

  • rearranging equipment
  • daydreaming about a new program that I could do
  • troubleshooting
  • mentally running the business

My workouts started getting rushed, postponed, or skipped altogether.

Not because I didn’t care but because there were simply too many distractions pulling my attention away from me.

Why I Joined Another Gym

I realized I needed boundaries not more motivation. So this week I decided to go ahead and join another gym.

When I walk in there, I’m not the owner.
I’m not the coach.
I’m not solving problems.
Not answering questions.
Not troubleshooting a new equipment arrangement.

I’m just a human taking care of her body.

Headphones in.
Focus on movement.
Time to breathe.
Time to train.
Time to reset.

And honestly? I think its exactly what I need!

My commitment is simple:

  • 3–4 workouts per week
  • 1–1.5 hours of uninterrupted training
  • No multitasking, no distractions, no rushing

Just movement, strength, and time to reconnect with myself.

Even coaches need accountability.
Even gym owners need protected space.
Even leaders need consistency.

Here’s the lesson I want you to take from this:

The best workout plan doesn’t matter if your environment doesn’t support follow-through.

Sometimes success isn’t about working harder it’s about working smarter and creating boundaries that protect your time, energy, and focus.

For some people, that looks like group classes.
For others, it’s personal training.
And sometimes, it’s simply changing the environment so you can show up consistently.

There is no “right” answer only what works for your real life.
