Why Strength Training Is Basically Health Insurance
Most people think of strength training as something you do to look better, lift heavier, or fit into smaller jeans.
Or even so something that you should “just do” in order to live longer and be more active as you age.
But what if I compared strength training to health insurance. Or any type of insurance for that matter.
You don’t get health insurance because you plan for something bad to happen.
You get it for the “oh shit” moments, the unexpected stuff you didn’t see coming.
Strength training and working out works the same way.
You Don’t Train for the Injury …..You Train for the Recovery
None of us wake up thinking:
“Today feels like a great day for surgery, injury, or life throwing a curveball.”
But those moments are inevitable and are bound to happen eventually.
When they do, your body either has:
- reserves of strength
- muscle mass
- bone density
- cardiovascular capacity
- nervous system efficiency
…or it doesn’t.
And that difference can be everything.
I had a conversation with one of our clients this morning that stuck with me.
She said:
“I really think because I was training before surgery, my recovery has been so much quicker and easier. My husband had the same surgery last year and I was assisting him with getting up from a chair. But I was able to walk hours after.”
And while yes we do need to take into account that “everyone is different.” She has a HUGE POINT!
When you strength train regularly before a surgery or injury, your body has:
- more muscle to prevent rapid loss during downtime
- stronger connective tissue
- better circulation for healing
- better movement awareness
- higher tolerance for stress
So when your body is forced into rest or rehab, it’s not starting from zero it’s starting from prepared.
Here’s the part most people don’t realize:
After surgery or injury, you will lose strength. Your body will atrophy.
But the question is:
- Did you start with a little… or a lot?
Strength training builds a buffer.
If you go into surgery already weak, every bit of muscle loss hits harder.
If you go in strong, your body has room to recover without completely falling apart.
That’s the insurance.
It’s about:
- walking around to go to the bathroom
- having the energy to do your PT exercises
- getting off the floor without thinking
- healing quicker and more efficiently
- returning to movement confidently
- bouncing forward, not backward
Strength training gives you options when life interrupts your routine.
You’re Training for the Version of You You Haven’t Met Yet
The version of you who:
- gets injured
- has surgery
- ages
- needs to recover faster
- wants independence longer
That version will be really grateful you started training before you needed it.
This is why we train the way we do at Iron Family Fitness.
We train for your future self. For:
- long-term health
- adaptability
- confidence in your body
- recovery when life gets messy
Strength training isn’t punishment. It’s preparation.
And just like insurance, you hope you never need it but when you do, you’ll be really glad it’s there.
